County of Solano Kicks Off Planning for Family Justice Center
Friday, October 30th, 2009
On Tuesday, October 20th, 2009, a diverse group of stakeholders gathered in Solano County to start a strategic planning process focused on creating a Family Justice Center. This is an exciting moment for Solano County as they strive to build on the strengths and major advances they have made combating the horrible impact of all forms of family violence.
The Family Justice Center (FJC) model, now established in more than 30 communities nationwide, involves the creation of a one-stop center offering coordinated services for victims of family violence. FJCs seek improvements in victim safety, increased success in offender prosecutions, and reductions in domestic violence homicide.
The Strategic Planning process, expected to be completed by March 2010, seeks to ensure that the variety of diverse stakeholders that are committed to the Solano County Family Justice Center work together as effectively as possible towards their common vision.
The kickoff had a great turnout of over 55 people including representatives of law enforcement, shelters, county agencies, community-based organizations. There was also a strong show of support from the region’s elected officials including: District Attorney Dave Paulson, County Supervisors Barbara Kondylis and Linda Seifert, Assemblymember Mariko Yamada, Vacaville City Councilmember Dilenna Harris as well as staff from the offices of Senator Pat Wiggins’ Office, Senator Lois Wolk’s Office, and Congressman George Millers’ Office.

Monday, October 26th, 2009
Congratulations to the Early Childhood Education program of the University of California, Berkeley on their 4-year grant award of $1,006,820 for child care services for student parents. Each year, the program will receive nearly $252,000 in US Department of Education funds for the Cal Child Care Access Means Parents In School (CCAMPIS) Scholars program. These funds will support a specialist to work with student parents, helping them locate child care on campus and in the communities where they live. Funds will also be used to develop a student parent co-op serving infants and children, expanding UCB child care campus capacity while reducing child care costs. The Glen Price Group was pleased to work with Early Childhood Education and UC Berkeley staff in developing this application.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Signs AB 73 and SB 635
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Two bills became California law on Sunday, October 11, 2009, that provide significant boosts to one existing and two planned Family Justice Centers. AB 73, sponsored by Assemblymember Mary Hayashi, extends by five years the County of Alameda’s ability to charge fees on copying vital certificates and to use this revenue to support the Alameda County Family Justice Center. SB 635, sponsored by Senator Patricia Wiggins, does the same thing for two family justice centers in the planning stages in Solano and Sonoma counties. The Glen Price Group wishes to thank Assemblymember Hayashi, Senator Wiggins, and their staffs for the hard work required to bring this legislation from concept to law. This was a great victory for victims of family violence.
