Announcing!! The City of Santa Rosa awarded $100,000 to Southwest Community Health Center to initiate Xinachtli: Young Men’s Empowerment, as part of the City’s program, “Reclaiming our Youth: Gang Prevention and Intervention.” SCHC’s application was one of 13 funded, out of an applicant pool of 44. The 19-month project will work with young men at risk for gang involvement by focusing on redefining the concept of “manhood” through a culturally-based prevention/education program. The program’s emphasis is on male responsibility, pregnancy prevention and relationship violence prevention. Our 12-week curriculum introduces young Latino and Native American men to the indigenous Latino concept of “El Hombre Noble’ (the noble man) as the foundation of male responsibility in an effort to increase awareness and personal responsibility. Participants will receive assistance with job development, academic advising and mentoring through on-going Circulo de Hombres support group.

Congratulations to the County of Sonoma for continuing to take strong steps to educate the public and create a strategic response to the rapidly growing Sudden Oak Death (SOD) problem. A multi-department collaborative was just awarded a grant by the USDA Forest Service, developed by the Glen Price Group, to strengthen these county programs.
