Looking back on our second year of operations serving some of the Bay Area’s and the country’s finest non-profit organizations and government agencies, we are very proud.

By all objective indicators, 2002 was a time when key services for communities, children, youth, and families were being cut back in the face of declining tax revenues and shrinking foundation portfolios. In the face of hard economic times, many corporations and individuals have been hard-pressed to continue to support ongoing programs, let alone to invest in new responses to growing needs in our communities.

That is one reason why we are so proud of our clients, old and new, who we were able to assist in raising over $8.8 million new dollars in 2002 to support highly innovative program activities. As of this writing, we had also submitted another $10.3 million in proposals that are under review.

But the proposal numbers only tell part of the story. Our clients are busy honing their operations to more effectively respond to their constituencies --- and we’re working with them to develop and sharpen their strategic plans, build staff and board capacity, and obtain the crucial investments they need to bring these plans to fruition.

BayTEC
BayTEC formally launched operations in the fall of 2001 and draws together community based IT training organizations, businesses, Workforce Investment Boards, and community colleges in a concerted effort to bring the benefits of careers in the IT field to the urban poor. The recipient, with the City of Richmond, of a Department of Labor H-1B grant in 2001 written by the Glen Price Group, BayTEC is currently developing plans and proposals to provide IT support to public K-12 school districts. In 2002, the Glen Price Group assisted BayTEC with several initiatives including a successful $300,000 proposal to the James Irvine Foundation.

Bay Area Partnership
In 2001, the Glen Price Group successfully assisted the Bay Area Partnership to seek funding for Contra Costa County’s Afterschool4All program bringing together four of the county’s school districts to successfully obtain $1.02 million in state of California after school program funding. This year, we worked with the Bay Area Partnership and the Walter S. Johnson Foundation to develop and submit four 21st Century Community Learning Center proposals to the state of California for the City of Richmond (2), Russian River After School Council, and the Ravenswood City School District.

Break Away Technologies
During 2002, the Glen Price Group worked with Break Away Technologies to submit a successful application for $350,000 in funding to the SBC Excelerator program and a $300,000 application to the United States Department of Education Community Technology Center program. The grant funds are enabling the development of highly innovative adult literacy and numeracy programs that will enable Break Away and its partner organizations to extend the benefits of their IT training programs to many more people. At year’s end, we worked with Break Away and the community of Friar’s Point, Mississippi to submit an application to the United States Department of Agriculture to bring a community-based broadband system to that rural community. At year’s end, we’re working with Break Away to establish a literacy-focused after school program in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

City of Richmond
Our ongoing work with the City of Richmond focused in 2002 on continued development of the Kids First! partnership. The City took the lead on two after school program proposals providing leadership for the efforts and concretely leading the way by making a commitment of $150,000 of its own funds to the program. As we begin 2003, we’re looking forward to working with the City of Richmond on key proposals to the state of California for park renovation using Proposition 40 bond funds.

County of Sonoma
In one of the most exciting developments for the Glen Price Group in 2002, we were selected by the County of Sonoma to provide a range of grant writing services for county departments. These include staff training, funding opportunity monitoring, and proposal writing. Together, we’re off to a great start. Our first workshop for county staff, Grant Seeking Fundamentals, received excellent evaluations and we currently have intermediate and advanced workshops scheduled for January and February 2003. We’re monitoring state and federal funding opportunities for county departments and posting these to a website we have developed for them and sending a digest to them via a weekly bulletin. At present, we are working with several departments on proposals addressing Youth Violence Prevention, Domestic Violence, and the construction of the new Valley of the Moon Children’s Home.

Oakland Unified School District
Oakland Unified School District and Oakland Head Start called upon the Glen Price Group to help them formulate a proposal to the United States Department of Education’s Early Reading First program. Working together, we developed a concept for Oakland HERE (Hubs of Early Reading Excellence) which will bring together elementary schools, libraries, and child development/head start centers in three Oakland neighborhoods for intensive coordination around pre-kindergarten reading skills development. We successfully passed through the pre-application phase and their full proposal is currently under review.

Workforce Investment Boards
During 2002, we worked with three separate Workforce Investment Boards and consortia of community based organizations, businesses, and training providers on the development and submission of Department of Labor H-1B proposals. We received good news on the San Francisco proposal and we are currently awaiting word on the San Mateo and New York proposals.

Many thanks to the Glen Price Group team: David Dearden, Laura Goldman, Christina Kellogg, Chris Sorensen, Christopher Szecsey, Elise Torreano, Suzanne Valdivia, and Joni Venticinque for the fantastic, high-quality work that made everything we accomplished in 2002 possible.
